Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The League City Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in League City typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common Clopay drum sizes and cable lengths on our trucks for same-day completion. Most jobs finish in under two hours once we’re on site. You’ll usually notice the problem when the door hangs crooked, one side lifts faster than the other, or you spot a frayed cable collecting near the bottom bracket.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay uses two main drum families across their residential line: standard-lift drums for doors up to 8 feet tall, and high-lift or vertical-lift drums for taller or custom-track installations. The popular Gallery, Classic, and Avante series in League City neighborhoods like Tuscan Lakes and Magnolia Creek most often run 400-8 or 525-18 drums with 1/8-inch or 5/32-inch aircraft-grade galvanized cable.

The part number matters. Clopay stamps a small code on the drum’s flat face, usually near the hub. If that stamp is worn off, we measure drum circumference, cable groove pitch, and shaft diameter on site. We carry OEM Clopay drums and cables, plus quality aftermarket equivalents from DDM and IDC that match spec exactly. For most League City homes built after 2005, the aftermarket saves thirty to forty dollars with no functional difference. On older Clopay doors with the original EZ-SET torsion system, we stick with OEM drums - the shaft interface is proprietary and aftermarket fit is inconsistent.

We are an independent service provider. Mainspring Garage Door Co. is not affiliated with Clopay Corporation.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door rises crooked or one side lags. When a drum slips on the torsion shaft or a cable frays and stretches unevenly, the door torques against itself. In League City’s humidity, drum set-screws loosen gradually, and owners often notice the tilt before they see the cable damage.
  • Cable hangs slack or bunches at the bottom bracket. A properly tensioned cable should run straight from drum to bracket with no droop. Slack means the drum is not winding evenly, or the cable has jumped its groove due to drum wear.
  • Grinding or popping from the header area during operation. Clopay drums with worn grooves will chew cable strands rather than guiding them smoothly. That popping sound is individual wires breaking under load.
  • The door falls hard when released manually. Cables are the safety catch. If one has snapped or slipped off the drum, the full door weight shifts to the remaining cable and the opener. This is when most League City owners call us - the door feels dangerous because it is.
  • Visible rust or fraying on the cable itself. Galvanized cable resists surface rust, but once moisture works inside the braid, individual strands fail from the core outward. We see this accelerate within three miles of Clear Creek, where salt air gets into garages through side-door gaps.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Clopay cable replacement (single) $130-$190
Clopay cable replacement (pair) $180-$250
Clopay drum replacement (single, with cable) $160-$250
Clopay drum replacement (pair, with cables) $220-$340

The range depends on drum size, whether the torsion spring needs partial unwinding to access the drum, and if the bottom brackets or cable sleeves also need replacement. We state the flat price before touching a tool. That price includes parts, labor, disposal of the old hardware, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. No add-ons, no surprises on the bill.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect. Look for the stamp on the drum face, check cable tension with the door closed, and photograph any fraying for our reference. Do not attempt replacement yourself.

Clopay cables run under several hundred pounds of torsion spring tension. Unwinding that spring without proper winding bars and training risks serious injury - the spring can release with enough force to break bones or worse. Drum replacement requires releasing the torsion system fully, securing the door in the open position, and retensioning precisely so the door balances correctly on both sides. One wrong turn and the door becomes a hazard.

We carry Clopay-compatible drums, cables, and hardware on every truck serving League City. Most cable and drum jobs finish in a single visit. Call (936) 246-3131 and we’ll quote the price before we roll.
